Read my friend's book

My friend and co-author of A Year of Hitchcock, Eric San Juan, has a new book, Lakehurst: Barrens, Blimps & Barons: The True Tale of a Pine Barrens Town. I've been reading it this week. It's a history book about the town of Lakehurst, New Jersey, most famous as the location of the Hindenburg disaster. Eric gets into the Hindenburg story in this book, but there's much, much more.

Eric grew up in Lakehurst and knows the area well. He also knows the people who tell the great stories, the great stories that fill this book. Lots of interesting stories about a cool little town. You don't have to be intimately familiar with the area (I'm not) to enjoy it. If you're into history, you should enjoy this book.

Give it a read. Not because it's written by a friend, but because it's a good read.

Amazing Phillies Stat of the Day

Phillies right-hander Cliff Lee has thrown three times as many shutouts in 2011 (six) as his next closest National League competitors (Clayton Kershaw and Jaime Garcia each have two). Despite this lofty record, he ranks second on his own team in complete games with six, trailing Roy Halladay, who has seven complete games, but hasn’t thrown a single shutout.

Amazing Phillies Stat of the Day

Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee led all of Major League Baseball in 2010 in fewest bases on balls per nine innings pitched (.763). In 2011, Lee has issued the most bases on ball on the entire Phillies’ staff (18). Despite this noticeable loss of control, Lee still ranks second in all of Major League Baseball in strikeouts/bases on balls ratio at 5.357, behind only teammate Roy Halladay at 7.000. Crazy numbers.

Amazing Phillies Stat of the Day

Since July 31, 2010, Phillies reliever Ryan Madson has allowed an earned run in just three of his last 53 appearances. Just my opinion, but that’s ridiculously good.
